Nect Green Code (NGC) is an indigenous non for profit organization that works towards contributing to the 2030 sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. We contribute to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger, SDG 5(Gender Equality), SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy) SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Background
Nect Green Code was born out of the need to amplify the voices of the communities that were affected by the oil developments in Uganda. In 2006, Uganda discovered commercial oil deposits. The confirmed oil deposits in the country estimated at over 6 billion barrels. To commercialise Uganda’s oil, the Ugandan government alongside TotalEnergies, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) intend to build several oil infrastructure including a pipeline, a refinery and others.
Project affected Persons have since then faced a lot of grievances such as under compensation, delayed compensation, floods, increased animal-human conflicts, Pollution, food insecurity among others. Nect Green Code was therefore formed to amplify their voices to be heard and find solutions from the relevant stakeholders such as government, Total Energies etc.
Furthermore, Oil activities in Uganda will undermine efforts to mitigate and stop the impacts of climate change. It will also undermine just energy transition efforts at both national and regional level. If all the oil projects of Tilenga, Kingfisher, East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline and the refinery are undertaken, they will result in the production of over 107 million metric tonnes of carbon per year. Poor and vulnerable communities including the children, elderly, women, rural communities and others will be impacted by climate change. Nect Green Code was formed to create awareness on the climate crisis and make efforts to demand for a just energy transition.
“Global warming is a reality that can no longer be ignored.”
